Total Part 1 Crime Increases Slightly

The Alexandria Police Department reports that total Part 1 crime increased 2.1% for a total of 79 offenses in calendar year 2008, the third lowest annual total in 40 years.  This increase was driven primarily by a rise in shoplifting and thefts from automobiles.  Homicide, robbery, aggravated assault and burglary declined in 2008; while rape, auto theft and larceny increased.

"Although total Part 1 crime increased slightly in 2008, I am pleased that violent crime continues to decline in the City.  The police department will continue its active analytical and strategic response to existing and emerging crime trends and repeat call for service locations in an effort to improve the quality of life and reduce crime below record lows we have experienced during the past several years.  I applaud the outstanding work and commitment of the men and women of the department, and the continued cooperation and support we receive from the City Manager, Elected Leaders, Commonwealth’s Attorney, Office of the Sheriff and the outstanding citizens we are proud to serve, said Alexandria Police Chief David P. Baker.
