Public Engagement

Public awareness and education are important to the City of Alexandria. There are multiple ways community members can learn about and provide feedback on the Potomac Yard Metrorail Station project, including attending ongoing Potomac Yard Metrorail Implementation Work Group (PYMIG), Board, and Commission meetings, as well as topic-specific community meetings and open houses.

Upcoming Events and Materials


2018 EVENTS

Design changes to the Potomac Yard Metrorail Station require an amendment to the approved DSUP. WMATA’s Contractor, Potomac Yard Constructors, submitted the DSUP amendment incorporating input received from stakeholders, including PYMIG, during Fall 2018. This submission will go in front of the Planning Commission on December 6 and City Council on December 15 for consideration.

2018 Events

April 12 – WMATA Finance and Budget Committee Meeting 

April 10 – City Council Legislative Meeting at City Hall
City Council and the WMATA Finance and Budget Committee approved raising the project budget to $320 million at the City Council Legislative Meeting on April 10, 2018.

April 4 – Community Meeting at the Charles Houston Recreation Center
City staff provided project updates on the procurement process, funding, schedule, and next steps.


2016 Events

In May and June 2016, City staff provided updates on the Potomac Yard Metrorail Station project to interested civic associations and other stakeholders. You can view the presentation  here.

May 11 – Community Meeting at the Durant Center  
The meeting focused on potential construction impacts and ways to minimize or avoid those impacts.

April 18 – Community Meeting at the Cora Kelly Recreation Center
The purpose of the meeting was to inform the public about potential construction impacts and to answer questions from residents.


2013 Events

December 10 – City Council Work Session at City Hall
City Council and City Staff discussed the progress of development, transportation projects, and open space projects in Potomac Yard September 21 – City Council Potomac Yard Tour and Briefing
City Council received a tour and comprehensive briefing on Potomac Yard issues.  The tour and briefing were open to the public.  Please see below for links to the information provided during the tour, as well as a video for the tour and briefing.


2012 Events

November 13 – City Council Work Session at City Hall
City Council and City Staff discussed the progress of the Potomac Yard development.

April 19 – Potomac Yard Metrorail Station EIS Public Meeting at Cora Kelly Recreation Center
The Potomac Yard Metrorail Station EIS team presented an update on the draft EIS review process.


Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) Outreach

The community has been involved throughout the planning and EIS processes. City staff will continue to provide updates to various neighborhood and civic associations, commissions, boards, and Council.

Following a public comment period and series of community meetings from April 3, 2015, through May 18, 2015, City Council formally considered the new station and its preferred location.  The City Council select of Alternative B as the preferred alternative permits the preparation of a Final EIS for approval by the FTA and NPS, after which the design and construction of the station can begin.

A public hearing as part of the EIS process took place before the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Board in April. 

On April 24, the City of Alexandria staff issued a report recommending Alternative B for the construction of the Potomac Yard Metrorail Station.  The staff report, along with the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) published on March 27, was the subject of eight public meetings and hearings prior to City Council's consideration on May 20.

A public hearing on the staff report was held before the Alexandria City Council on Saturday, May 16.
