Kick off the holiday season by making plans to attend the 2017 City of Alexandria Tree Lighting Ceremony on Friday, November 24, at 6 p.m., at Market Square, 301 King St.

On Friday, November 17, 2017 at 6:15pm at the Charles Houston Recreation Center, 901 Wythe St., the Charles Houston Advisory Council (CHAC), in Partnership with the City of Alexandria Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities, will open the newly renovated Charles Houston Teen Center.

This year’s theme is “Filled with Glee at Forty-Three!” and a special program by Mainstream and Plus Tips. The annual square and round dance benefits the United States Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Drive by collecting toys and donations at the event.

The Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities offers the community a personal opportunity to honor a friend or loved one by adopting a bench at one of our parks. When you adopt, City Staff will install a personalized plaque on either an existing or a new park bench.

RPCA and Rebuilding Together Alexandriahave partnered to improve the neighborhood parks in Hume Springs and Lynhaven. Rebuilding Together was awarded design and construction funding improvements for 3550 Commonwealth Avenue and the Dale Street portion of Four Mile Run Park.

Information gathered from the planning process will be used for the development of a recommendation to be provided to City Council in the fall.

The Alexandria Children and Youth Master Plan (CYMP) Out of School Time (OSTP) Work Group has compiled a list of City funded after school program opportunities for youth. The list includes operational information, service offerings and a link to the providers’ website for more information.

The theme of the 2017-18 Out of School Time Program is “Passport to Fun!” where children are invited to explore the world through fun, adventure and discovery while making new friends. Participants are placed in age groups with highly trained and professional recreation leaders who rotate through scheduled activities in creative and performing arts, music, history, fine arts, sports, fitness and health, education and leisure, field trips and family events.

The City’s Waterfront Plan envision a new public plaza at the foot of King Street called Fitzgerald Square. The plaza encompasses the City owned properties of 1 & 2 King Street, and the existing King Street Park, totaling about one acre of land. When the Old Dominion Boat Club moves to Prince Street, the City plans to create an “interim” public space to enjoy until construction begins on the permanent park.

The City of Alexandria has awarded a contract to Environmental Quality Resources, LLC (EQR) for the construction of the Windmill Hill shoreline restoration and other related park improvements.  The project also includes pedestrian-oriented improvements to South Union Street.  Construction has begun and is anticipated to be substantially complete by March 2018 with an anticipated park opening in spring 2018.

Alexandria Health Department (AHD) has found no evidence to date that the chemicals present in the City of Alexandria’s synthetic turf playing fields present a health concern.
