For the busy Duke Street corridor I created four traffic box designs that match the dynamism of the street with images that are colorful, bold and graphic. The four works are largely abstract and reveal my interest in decoration, repetition and ornamentation. The images that the Duke Street traffic boxes are based on were originally made with acrylic paint, found images, ballpoint pen and paper. They paired found natural images gathered from century old encyclopedias and outdated, dusty library books with electric colors and geometric patterns that move fluidly back and forth. The collages were then repeated digitally to create a kaleidoscopic effect on the Duke Street traffic boxes. Inspired in equal parts by Eastern spiritual icons and American psychedelic music posters of the 1960’s, these collected images of nature float through fields marked with shape and line, revealing a pure visual pleasure found in color and pattern.
