Weather-Related Recreation Services Cancellations and Closures

For the safety of recreation services participants and employees, it is sometimes necessary to cancel programs and close centers. Examples of weather that may interrupt indoor or outdoor recreation services include winter weather, severe storms, excessive rain, and extreme heat.

To check for service impacts:

To sign up to receive notifications of current service impacts:

Notifications of cancellations and closures are posted as soon as the City of Alexandria government or Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities had made the decision. For weather with wide impact, such as winter weather, a decision may be made for all City services, including recreation services. For weather with narrow impact, such as a thunderstorm, a decision may be made for only the impacted services, such as aquatics services. ACPS cancellations and closures do not determine recreation service adjustments; for example, ACPS school closures do not include Out of School Time Program.

Depending on lead time and staff availability, direct notifications to current participants are not always possible. When in doubt, please call the Registration and Reservation Office at 703.746.5414 or the relevant recreation center or aquatics facility to inquire further.

Program Make-ups and Credits

Impacted program participants are notified of make-ups and credits by phone or email. Decisions are based upon instructor and facility availability.
