Inmate Work Detail

Support Services staff supervise the Inmate Work Detail, composed of carefully screened inmates who, under direct Deputy Sheriff supervision, complete public works projects that have included the beautification of Old Town, litter collection along City roadways and highway interchanges, and school and playground clean up and repair.

Inmate Work Detail painting benchesIn 2016, the Work Detail performed 2,743 hours of service and saved the City more than $75,000 in labor costs.

In addition to projects in the community, the Work Detail also provides important cost-saving services to other City departments. In 2016, the Work Detail painted walls at the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter; moved office furniture and equipment for the City Archives, Department of Community and Human Services and Department of General Services; cut and removed massive overgrowth from the Union Station property; repaired plow ruts on the Commonwealth Avenue median; and distributed and collected barricades for special events like the City's Birthday Celebration, parades and races.

The following are other examples of work performed by the Inmate Work Detail:

  • Neighborhood clean ups throughout the City 
  • Litter collection through the City
  • Snow removal at Public Safety Center
  • Clean up at City parks
  • Storm debris removal 
  • Landscaping at City fire stations, firearms range, impound lot and Public Safety Center 
  • Putting up holiday decorations along King Street
