Inmate Work Detail

Support Services staff supervise the Inmate Work Detail, composed of carefully screened inmates who, under direct Deputy Sheriff supervision, complete public works projects that have included the beautification of Old Town, litter collection along City roadways and highway interchanges, and school and playground clean up and repair.

The Work Detail picks up litter throughout the City, regularly cleans up several City parks, and drops off and then collects barricades for special events including the City's Birthday Celebration, parades, races, and festivals like Art on the Avenue, the King Street Art Festival, and a Taste of Del Ray. During the winter holidays, the Work Detail decorates King Street with garland for the Old Town Business and Professional Association and unloads hundreds of trees for the Alexandria Police Youth Camp's Christmas tree sale.

In addition to projects in the community, the Work Detail also provides important cost-saving services to City departments, like cleaning and organizing storage and filing areas at Archives and Records, and cleaning, painting, landscaping, moving furniture, and removing snow at the Public Safety Center.
