Flood Mitigation

The City of Alexandria, Virginia is embarking on a multi-year capital program to reinvent the City’s Waterfront as a dynamic gateway to historic Old Town. The $60 million program includes development of a flood mitigation system, creation of a riverfront promenade and the new Fitzgerald Square plaza.

Flood Mitigation Implementation

The City is working with a design team from Stantec Consulting Services Inc. to conduct the preliminary engineering for the Flood Mitigation Implementation project. The contract was executed in February 2016 and work began in March 2016.

    RFP 527 – Alexandria Waterfront – Flood Mitigation Implementation

    The City issued this request for proposals in order to solicit proposals from interested and qualified proposers to provide professional architectural and engineering services related to the implementation of flood mitigation, infrastructure, and open space improvements as depicted in the “Alexandria Waterfront Pricing Design Schematic,” dated August 12, 2014; and the “Waterfront Flood Mitigation Project, 15% Concept Design Submission.”

    Schematic Landscape & Flood Mitigation Design Documents

    The City's Department of Planning and Zoning and Project Implementation worked with consultant teams led by OLIN and URS Corporation to develop schematic design documents depicting the vision of the  Waterfront Small Area Plan.  More information on the process of developing the schematic design documents can be found  here.
