Interim Fitzgerald Square Project

The City’s Waterfront Plan envision a new public plaza at the foot of King Street called Fitzgerald Square. The plaza encompasses the City owned properties of 1 & 2 King Street, and the existing King Street Park, totaling about one acre of land. When the Old Dominion Boat Club moves to Prince Street, the City plans to create an “interim” public space to enjoy until construction begins on the permanent park.

The new park will encompass the current location of King Street Park and the land on either side now occupied by the Old Dominion Boat Club. The overall concept for Waterfront public spaces was approved in 2014, but it may be a decade or more before the planned flood mitigation infrastructure is in place and the permanent park can be constructed.

When the Old Dominion Boat Club moves a few blocks south to its new home (late 2017), the City plans to create an "interim" public space for Alexandrians to enjoy until construction can begin on the permanent park.
