Waterfront Common Elements

The Alexandria Waterfront is comprised of three key components: the streets connecting the city fabric to the Waterfront, the promenade as a connective line along the Waterfront, and the unique “rooms” that celebrate the character of individual areas within the Waterfront. These three components all contain common elements.

Waterfront Common Elements

Common elements are the standard materials, fixtures, elements, and applications that unify the design and appearance of the Waterfront and set it within the context of Old Town.

Design guidelines for the common elements create standards for implementation of the Waterfront projects and are divided into three categories:

  • 1.Paving – colors and materials for streets, sidewalks, and the pedestrian promenade
  • 2.Lighting – consistent promenade lighting
  • 3.Art and history – historic shoreline and promenade banding that can display inscriptions related to Alexandria
