Persons with disabilities may request signage for a disability parking space on the public street in front of their home. This is not reserved for the exclusive use of the resident who requests it but may only be used by vehicles with a DMV disabled license plate or placard.
Requests must meet the following minimum requirements:
Located in front of a single-family, duplex, or townhouse residence
There is no off-street parking (e.g. driveway or garage) at the applicant’s residence
There is not another reserved disability space on the block
There is a legal parking space in front of the address
If the minimum requirements are met, an applicant may submit an Application for a Disability Parking Space. The following documentation is required with the application:
A valid VA DMV disabled parking license plate or placard
Proof the applicant resides at the address in front of the space that is requested (e.g. vehicle registration)
Medical certification submitted to DMV or a doctor’s letter certifying the disability
Complete the Application for a Disability Parking Space and submit it with all required documentation to Geralyn Taylor by email at Geralyn.Taylor@alexandriava.gov or in person/by mail to 421 King Street, Suite 235, Alexandria, VA 22314.
Staff will review the application to ensure it is complete. Complete applications will be processed within 30 days. Applicants will be notified if additional information is required.
Staff notifies the applicant in writing whether the request has been approved or denied. If approved, the signs will be installed within 2 weeks.
Applicants are required to recertify annually to keep the reserved space in front of their residence.
