Mobility Services Programs
GO Alex
GO Alex is the City's transportation demand management (TDM) program and a resource for transportation options. For residents and visitors, the program provides many resources for those who are taking transit, walking, biking, ridesharing or using other ways to get around. For
employers, GO Alex helps set up commuter transportation programs.
Capital Bikeshare
Alexandria joined the regional Capital Bikeshare network in September 2012 with eight stations. Today, there are 31 stations throughout the City of Alexandria, with more on the way. The Mobility Services division helps to market Capital Bikeshare to Alexandria residents, visitors and workers.
Want to save time, save money, have fun, get exercise, and go green? Joining Capital Bikeshare is easy. Follow the simple instructions here to learn how to become a member. In addition, GoAlex provides a free 24-hour membership coupon for City residents. For more information, visit alexandriava.gov/Bikesharing.
Disability Parking
Persons with disabilities may request signage for a disability parking space on the public street in front of their home. This is not reserved for the exclusive use of the resident who requests it but may only be used by vehicles with a DMV disabled license plate or placard.
DOT Paratransit
DOT Paratransit is a program that provides paratransit services under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), to Alexandria residents. Individuals with disabilities which prevent them from being able to use accessible transit on a temporary or permanent basis may be able to use DOT paratransit services.
Guaranteed Ride Home
The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (MWCOG) manages the Guaranteed Ride home program, which offers a free and reliable ride home when one of life's unexpected emergencies arise. If you rideshare, bicycle, walk or take public transportation to work at least twice a week, you qualify for a free emergency ride home up to 4 times annually. Providers are on call Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. to make sure you
get home when you need to.
Parking and Curbside Management
Parking is an essential component of the City's transportation system and requires careful management of both on-street and off-street spaces. The City is committed to working with businesses, residents and visitors alike to appropriately manage parking needs. Parking initiatives are ongoing throughout the City in all areas including
residential permit parking,
motorcoach parking, and designated on-street spaces for
food trucks. In addition, the City has also completed several
parking studies and is implementing recommendations from these studies, including the
Old Town Area Parking (OTAPS) Parking Standards for New Development, and
Del Ray Parking Study.

Transportation Management Plans
A Transportation Management Plan, or TMP, is a site-specific plan of strategies to encourage residents and employees to take public transportation, walk, bike or share a ride, as opposed to driving alone. TMPs are part of the City of Alexandria Zoning Ordinance. The ordinance requires that projects of a certain size submit a special use permit application which must include a transportation management plan. A TMP fund is established to finance the transportation strategies to encourage people to use modes other than the single occupancy vehicle.
