Transportation throughout the City of Alexandria relies on a network of infrastructure, which includes bridges. As part of this expansive network, the City maintains 29 highway bridges and more than 40 pedestrian bridges.

The bridges are on a recurring inspection cycle, and all are currently in satisfactory condition as indexed by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).

CSX Rail Bridge over King Street and Commonwealth Ave. Maintenance Update
The rail bridges over King Street and Commonwealth Ave. in the vicinity of the King Street Metro station are owned and maintained by CSX. In February of 2021, it was reported to the City that a number of pieces of wood had fallen from the bridge, resulting in a temporary closure of King Street. The City has worked closely with CSX to investigate the cause of the issue, to insure proper repairs are made, and the bridge remains in safe condition. Correspondence regarding this effort can be found below.
