Alexandria Police Officer-Involved Shooting at Canterbury Square Under Investigation
ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Today, at approximately 4:05 a.m., two Alexandria Police officers responded to an apartment complex at 27 Canterbury Square for the report of a woman being shot.
Upon arrival to the apartment, officers encountered an individual inside the residence and moved them to safety.
Inside the apartment, officers encountered an adult male suspect who had barricaded himself inside a room where officers believed the female victim was located. After refusing officers’ commands, the suspect advanced toward the officers. During the encounter, two officers discharged their service weapons.
They later located the female victim inside the bedroom with multiple gunshot wounds to her body.
Officers rendered life-saving measures to both the male suspect and female victim; however, both individuals were later pronounced deceased.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the official cause and manner of death.
The officers involved are currently on administrative leave, consistent with department policy. Collectively, the officers have seven and a half years of service with the Alexandria Police Department.
Pursuant to department policy, the regional Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) is conducting the criminal investigation into the critical incident. The Office of Professional Responsibility of the Alexandria Police Department is investigating whether officers violated departmental policy. The Office of the Independent Police Auditor is conducting an independent investigation and reviewing the evidence in this case. The Independent Police Auditor reports to our Mayor and City Council and works with an established Police Oversight Board, per City ordinance.
This is an ongoing investigation, and information is subject to change.
