Background:
Vision: Empowering teens to lead healthful lives
Mission: To ensure that each and every Alexandrian teen succeeds – physically, emotionally, socially, and academically – by collaboratively providing an easily accessible wellness center at T.C. Williams High School.
In 2010, the Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS), Alexandria Health Department, Alexandria Community Services Board, parents, and community representatives worked together to transform the former Adolescent Health Center to the Teen Wellness Center, relocating it to T.C. Williams High School. On September 1, 2010, the new Teen Wellness Center made its debut.
The new location of the Teen Wellness Center facilitates stronger collaborations among City departments, organizations, and community partners. Through this transformation and relocation, the Center will increase opportunities for health education and make services more accessible and available to even more Alexandrian teens.
The Teen Wellness Center provides a variety of health services to youth between the ages of 12-19 years. These services include treatment of minor illnesses, immunizations, and physical examinations required for schools, participation in sports, employment, and the Special Olympics. Written parental consent is required before any of the aforementioned services can be provided.
In addition, the Teen Wellness Center provides health education, behavior change counseling, pregnancy testing, diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, reproductive health services (to include the provision of birth control methods), and mental health and substance abuse counseling. State law permits these services to be offered without parental consent.
How to Take Part:
During the transformation and relocation of the Adolescent Health Center to the Teen Wellness Center, two committees were created to support the vision and mission:
The Teen Wellness Center Community Advisory Board: comprised of parents, teachers, community and organization representatives, and any other interested individuals within the community. The purpose of the Teen Wellness Community Advisory Board is to provide a forum for community organizations and members of the community to offer input, guidance and support for the Teen Wellness Center and its development in empowering teens to lead healthful lives.
The Teen Wellness Center Youth Advisory Group: comprised of teens between the ages of 12-19 years. The purpose of the Teen Wellness Youth Advisory Group is to offer an educational opportunity for wellness and leadership development and to provide a forum for young people to offer youth-specific input, guidance and support for the Teen Wellness Center. The Advisory Group will also strive to empower teens to lead healthful lives.
