Alexandria Police Charge Driver in Fatal Pedestrian Crash

ALEXANDRIA, VA. – A driver has been indicted in connection with a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred earlier this year in Alexandria.

On April 20, 2026, at approximately 5:30 p.m., Alexandria Police officers responded to the intersection of North Saint Asaph Street and Montgomery Street for a report of a vehicle that had struck a pedestrian. The pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene by Alexandria Fire Department medics.

The victim was identified as Norma Floyd-Sayles, 62, of Alexandria.

The Alexandria Police Department's Crash Reconstruction Team conducted an extensive investigation into the collision. Following the completion of the investigation, the case was presented to the Alexandria Commonwealth's Attorney's Office.

On July 15, 2026, the Alexandria Grand Jury returned an indictment charging Tekaligne Shirko, 46, of Lorton, Virginia, with:

  • Failure to Yield to a Pedestrian Causing Death
  • Involuntary Manslaughter

Shirko surrendered today and is being processed through the Alexandria Adult Detention Center. A court date has not been set.

The Alexandria Police Department appreciates the thorough investigative work of the Crash Reconstruction Team and the partnership of the Alexandria Commonwealth's Attorney's Office throughout this case.

As this is an active criminal prosecution, no additional information is available at this time.

Mr. Shirko was indicted on failure to yield to a pedestrian causing death and involuntary manslaughter.
