Potential for Severe Winter Weather — Prepare Now

The City of Alexandria will be under a Winter Weather Advisory from 8 p.m. Saturday, December 13 until 7 a.m. Sunday, December 14.

The National Weather Service predicts 2-4 inches of snow accumulation in the region, which could create hazardous conditions and make travel dangerous in northern Virginia, Washington, D.C., and central Maryland. Temperatures will fall into the teens Sunday night, freezing moisture on the roadways.

Avoid traveling if possible, and if you must be on the roads, slow down and use caution. The latest road conditions for the state you are calling from can be obtained by calling 5-1-1.

Please call 703.746.4444 or utilize @AlexandriaVA311 to report non-emergency concerns. For immediate emergency assistance, call 911. For non-emergency City Services, call 703.746.4311.

Prepare for winter weather:

With the weather expected to drop to dangerously cold temperatures, be prepared and know where you can go to get out of the cold. The City’s 2355-A Mill Rd Winter Shelter will remain open until 7 a.m. on Tuesday, December 16.

Warming centers are also offered at various recreation centers. Visit the https://www.alexandriava.gov/RecreationCenters page for full business hours. Additionally, the https://alexlibraryva.org/locations branches are open for warming needs during regular operating hours.

  • If you have a pet, be sure to provide them access to a warm shelter, preferably indoors, as well as plenty of food and water.
  • Prepare your home to keep out the cold with insulation, caulking, and weather stripping. Keep pipes from freezing by allowing faucets to drip, keeping cabinet doors open, and keeping garage doors closed.

Follow local media and the National Weather Service winter weather website for information on weather conditions and forecasts.
