The City of Alexandria does not operate any public utilities. The following companies are the primary providers of their respective services: Virginia American Water, Verizon, Comcast, Dominion Virginia Power, Washington Gas, Alexandria Renew Enterprises.

This page lists utilities that are available for purchase by individual consumers and are provided by entities in Alexandria.  The following entities are the primary providers of their respective services. Some of these services may also be available from or resold by other providers.

Drinking Water Service

For new service, questions or concerns, or to report a problem with water service or water mains:

Power Service

For new service, questions or concerns, or to report a problem with power service, including reporting power outages, power line issues, or for miscellaneous items to be removed from power lines:

Gas Service

For new service, questions or concerns, or to report a problem with gas service:

  • Contact Washington Gas at (703.750.1000). 
  • If you smell gas, leave the area immediately, call 911 and then contact Washington Gas.

For billing questions or concerns, or to report a problem with sewage/wastewater service:

Street Lights

Most public street lights in the City of Alexandria are maintained by Dominion Energy.


The City of Alexandria operates a Stormwater Utility, which collects a Stormwater Utility Fee to fund community stormwater management programs.  The Fee is charged as a separate line item on the real estate tax bills sent to all residential and non-residential property owners.
