Question: What is the cost of securing additional cameras with battery capability that could be placed around the City more easily? How many cameras would APD suggest are needed to better support our surveillance efforts at this time? (Councilwoman Gaskins)

Response: Currently, the Police Department has one mounted surveillance camera attached to a trailer. This trailer requires two Department staff to move it from one location to another. The cost to secure at least one camera and trailer are estimated at $70,000. The Department’s existing staff can manage one more camera. An additional camera would require additional support. Supporting staff would be required to support this program and would also attribute a rise in total costs. Additional research is being conducted to determine where in the city cameras will be placed.  In addition, we will be evaluating other types of cameras that could be more easily deployed and provide surveillance capabilities without the same level of cost and resources as the trailer attached cameras require of staff.
