Public Notice: Retention Period Expiring for Parent Infant Education Program Medical Records 1993-1996 

A DCHS CONNECT NEWS HIGHLIGHT 

September 10, 2021--The Department of Community and Human Services Parent Infant Education (PIE) Program is offering anyone who participated in the program during the years 1993-1996 the opportunity to obtain medical records before the retention period for those records expires on October 11.  

Participants wanting to obtain their records should call the Health Information Unit at 703.746.3555 or email MHMedicalRecords@alexandriava.gov before October 11, after which remaining records will be destroyed under the department’s retention policy. 

PIE is part of the statewide early intervention program known as the Infant Toddler Connection of Virginia. Any infant or toddler in Virginia who isn’t developing as expected or who has a medical condition that can delay typical development is eligible to receive early intervention supports and services under Part C of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Starting intervention early can have a significant impact on a child’s ability to learn new skills and overcome challenges and increase success in school and life.  

PIE provides early intervention supports and services to Alexandria families so they can help their children learn basic and new skills during everyday activities and routines. Examples of supports include service coordination, developmental therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, social work services, speech therapy and vision services. 

Typically, these services are provided in the home or community where the child learns and plays; during the pandemic, PIE services are offered primarily through telehealth platforms, like video or telephone calls. PIE provides videos illustrating what physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech-language therapy look like via telehealth. 

Residents with concerns about the development of their children birth through age two can call 703.746.3363. Early intervention supports and services are available for all eligible children and their families regardless of the family’s ability to pay.
