Winter Shelter 2020 Now Open in Two Locations

November 3, 2020--The City of Alexandria Winter Shelter for individuals and families experiencing homelessness is now open in two locations. A shelter at Lee Center (1108 Jefferson) is serving single adults and another at Carpenter's Shelter (5701 Duke St., Suite D) is serving families. The location serving families will relocate to 930 North Henry Street on November 11.

The Winter Shelter program, also called hypothermia shelters, is operated by Carpenter’s Shelter to ensure that guests have a warm, clean and safe environment to retreat from the elements of winter at night. The locations are open 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. daily through March 31 regardless of weather conditions.

The City added Lee Center as the location for individuals experiencing homelessness in order to provide space that allows for appropriate physical distancing and air ventilation for guests and staff, as required by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as an isolation space for any guests who may develop a fever or fall ill during the day. Both locations screen staff and guests for COVID-19 upon arrival.

Transportation to and from the shelters is provided by Winter Shelter staff at locations throughout Old Town Alexandria. In the morning, guests at Lee Center will be provided transportation to the Carpenter’s Shelter day program, David’s Place.

Guests in both locations are provided case management services with a focus on obtaining housing. Guests are also provided referrals for therapeutic care, social services, medical care, education support and other community resources.

The PPEH strives to ensure the planning, coordination and implementation of an effective and efficient continuum of care to prevent and end homelessness in the City of Alexandria.
