Free Trainings on Adverse Childhood Experiences Help Flatten the Mental Health Curve
A DCHS CONNECT HIGHLIGHT
April 7, 2022- In the 1990s, a landmark study on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) discovered that ACEs and trauma are the leading cause of the nation's social and health problems. Examples of ACEs include divorce, parental abandonment, economic hardship, family substance use, and physical and emotional abuse. Add to this the fear, stress and losses from the pandemic, and the racial trauma and civil strife, and it is no surprise that people in communities are struggling.
Join the City for a free virtual training to learn about ACEs and how to support the children and adults affected by them. Hear about the landmark ACE study, the impact of stress on the brain and ways it affects a person over the course of their lifetime. Discover how to promote resilience in youth and adults, so that together everyone can create a healthier community. This presentation is appropriate for both mental health professionals and the public.
Register for an upcoming training: April 12 at 10 a.m. or April 22 at 9 a.m.
Since November 2021, RAISE has offered monthly opportunities for the public to take this free training. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, RAISE also developed a Community Mental Health and Resilience Plan. The Plan recommends mental health strategies to support all of Alexandria's workforce, parents, youth, and residents throughout and after the pandemic.
