ALX Preschool has opened enrollment for children ages 3 and 4.  Families are encouraged to enroll their children for the 2025-2026 school year. Eligible children are matched with one of 16 providers in Alexandria, offering flexible hours and evidence-based curriculums. To apply, children must be 3 by September 30, reside in Alexandria, and meet income guidelines.

ALX Preschool is a network of high-quality care and education programs designed to provide essential early learning opportunities for children aged 3 to 4 in Alexandria, Virginia. This program is part of a broader initiative to help ensure that every child, regardless of background, has access to early educational experiences that will set them up for success. Research consistently shows that children who attend a high-quality preschool program, coupled with supportive learning environments at home, develop stronger math and reading skills, are better prepared for kindergarten, and experience fewer behavioral challenges in class. These early learning experiences have long-term benefits, with children attending preschool more likely to graduate from high school and pursue higher education.

ALX Preschool offers a coordinated enrollment system that matches eligible children with one of 16 public and private early education providers in Alexandria. The participating centers offer a wide range of services, including flexible hours to accommodate various family schedules. The program also focuses on providing an evidence-based curriculum that promotes language development, social skills, problem-solving abilities and physical growth. The curriculum includes early literacy, math science, social studies, art, music and physical activities to support well-rounded development.

One of the unique features of ALX Preschool is its commitment to cultural diversity, ensuring that children experience a variety of cultural perspectives that enrich their learning. In addition to the educational component, ALX Preschool programs provide nutritious breakfast, lunch and snacks to ensure children’s health and well-being. Overall, this program provides health and wellness services for both children and their families, helping to create a holistic support system for all participants. This approach ensures that children are not only intellectually prepared for school but also receive the care and resources necessary for their overall development.

ALX Preschool is managed by Kids’ First Years, a collaborative effort of organizations working to create an equitable and accessible early care and education system for all children.

To be eligible, children must also reside in Alexandria and meet specific income requirements. The ALX Preschool and Family Resource Center is located at 4850 Mark Center Drive. Families can reach the program by phone at 703.746.5437 or via email at ALXPreschool@alexandriava.gov.
