This September, the City of Alexandria proudly honored its centenarians in a heartfelt ceremony at City Hall’s Vola Lawson Lobby. Hosted by the Department of Community & Human Services in partnership with Senior Services of Alexandria, the event paid tribute to residents who had reached, or were approaching, the remarkable milestone of 100 years- old.

Four centenarians were recognized in person during the celebration, while others were honored virtually or through family representatives. In total, Alexandria celebrated individuals ranging from age 99 to 104, including one 99-year-old, five residents aged 101, four aged 102, two aged 103, and three aged 104.

The ceremony highlighted the wisdom and resilience of those who have lived through decades of change. When asked what advice they would share with younger generations, honorees offered reflections such as:

“Eat right, have fun and rest.”

“Invest in real estate.”

“Travel to new places, meet new people for unforgettable experiences.”

“As long as you are not hurting anyone, do whatever you want.”

“Make wise choices throughout your lifetime.”

“If possible, stay close to family.”

Centenarians also shared secrets to their longevity. Some credited healthy diets, daily exercise, or family support, while others mentioned small steady habits like drinking tea each morning, taking cod liver oil, or saying daily prayers. One honoree reflected, “Eat well, sleep well, and treat others well and your days will be longer.” Another remarked that “getting ready every day and always looking your best” helped keep life vibrant.

When reflecting on the most important inventions in their lifetimes, honorees pointed to transformative innovations such as the telephone, cars, television, and home appliances like washers, dryers, and air conditioners. These are reminders of just how much progress they have witnessed over the last century.

City officials emphasized that these Alexandrians represented more than long life. These individuals embodied a living legacy of perseverance, family, and community. Their stories and experiences continue to inspire younger generations and remind the city of the importance of honoring elders who have witnessed and shaped history.

The City of Alexandria and Senior Services of Alexandria expressed gratitude to all who participated in the celebration and encouraged community members to continue cherishing and learning the wisdom of the senior class.
