National Drug & Alcohol Recovery Month: Strength in Healing & Community
Since its inception in 1989, National Drug & Alcohol Recovery Month has paved a path toward healing and hope, emphasizing the transformative power of prevention, treatment, and sustained recovery from substance use dependency. It’s a time to uplift stories of resilience, affirm that recovery is real and reinforce that no one walks this journey alone.
SAMSHA’s 2025 Theme: “Recovery is REAL”
This year’s theme, “Recovery is REAL”, stands for Restoring Every Aspect of Life. It reinforces four essential foundation blocks shaping one’s recovery:
Health: nurturing physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
Home: fostering environments of safety and stability.
Community: building belonging, shared strength, and mutual support.
Purpose: cultivating meaning, connection, and forward momentum.
Alexandria DCHS Events: Connect, Create, Celebrate
The City of Alexandria’s Department of Community & Human Services (DCHS) is hosting a series of events this September designed to celebrate recovery, reduce stigma, and support community wellness.
On August 28, City Hall lit up in purple (photo below) to honor the memory of those lost to overdose and recognize the impact on families and communities. This was a powerful visual tribute that stresses the importance of remembrance and the urgent need for compassion and support.
On September 4, the Recovery Month Day Event was held for clients and staff at the Del Pepper Community Resource Center. This event offered a healing combination of creative expression and mindfulness featuring breath work, painting and mandala art sessions, chair yoga, and lunch.
