Summer Safety Banner

Summer is a time to relax, explore, and have fun, but staying safe is just as important as having a good time. Whether you’re traveling, hanging out with friends, or just enjoying the sunshine, a little goes a long way. Here are safety tips for teens and young adults to keep in mind this summer.

Be Aware of the Heat

Hot weather can sneak up on you. Know the signs of heat exhaustion like dizziness, fatigue, and nausea. Take breaks in the shade, stay hydrated and avoid too much activity during peak heat hours 10 A.M. to 4 P.M.

Use Wheels Wisely

Bikes, skateboards, skates and scooters are great but don’t forget safety. Wear a helmet, obey traffic rules and be visible to cars and trucks. Never ride under the influence and never ride with both earbuds in. Having one earbud in allows you to focus better on your surroundings and hear horns, sirens, etc.

Practice Safe Driving

Distracted or impaired driving can turn a fun night into a tragedy. Put your phone away, never drive under the influence and make sure everyone wears their seatbelt. If you are tired or are not in a state of mind to get behind the wheel, find another way to get home. Your safety isn’t worth the risk.

Protect Your Mental Health

Summer can come with social pressure, FOMO (fear of missing out), or body image stress. Give yourself space to recharge. Unplug from social media, talk to someone you trust, and prioritize mental rest. If you’re struggling, call or text 988 for support at any time.

Watch Your Digital Footprint

Think before you post. Avoid sharing your location in real-time and be careful with personal information. Protect your privacy and take regular breaks from social media to avoid burnout and anxiety.

Be Aware of New Environments

New places are exciting but plan ahead. Whether you’re exploring a hiking trail or heading to a new part of town, let someone know your plans, take essential supplies, and stay alert to your surroundings.

Stay Safe at Night

Going out after dark? Make sure to stick with your friends, stay in well-lit areas, and trust your gut if something feels off. Avoid isolated spots and always have a plan to get home safely, whether it’s a ride service, public transit, or a designated driver.

Lock It Up!

Always lock your car and house doors, even if you’re stepping away for a moment or just got inside. Don’t ever leave valuables in plain sight, and keep keys or wallets secured. A few seconds of caution can prevent major hassles later.

Wrap Up! Practice Safe Sex

Being sexually active comes with responsibilities. Using protection, like condoms, is essential to prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unintended pregnancies. In the City, the “Wrap Up Alexandria” program provides free condoms and educational material through strategically placed dispensers across the City. This initiative, launched by the Alexandria Campaign on Adolescent Pregnancy (ACAP), aims to make condoms more accessible and promote positive choices about sexual health.

For more information and dispenser locations, visit the Wrap Up, Alexandria page.

The Bottom Line is

Summer is yours to enjoy. Just stay aware and take care of yourself. Smart choices keep the fun going and help you avoid risks. Here’s to a safe, memorable season ahead!
