Alexandria, a top 10 winner since 2005, is developing a new municipal fiber-optic network, which will form the bedrock for plans to build future smart city technologies, IoT, autonomous vehicles and anything else it needs in the years ahead. The municipal fiber-optic network will connect schools, libraries and support economic growth down the road.

Alexandria has partnered with Arlington County on a shared Smart911 website that allows residents to make their medical information more accessible to first responders; created a task force to work with business representatives on a Mobile Device Management program to make mobile tools and services more accessible and collaborative; created a "challenge team" of stakeholders to train city employees on Microsoft Office 365; revamped various processes for people to report streetlight outages, order mulch and get contracts approved; and launched the first phase of a new stormwater utility program, including a way to estimate fees, apply for credit and forward fee data to treasury for billing. This program earned Alexandria the Public Technology Institute's 2018 Sustainability Award.

To expand Wi-Fi access, Alexandria has installed over 135 access points across 21 city sites, with immediate plans to add almost 100 more. 

Alexandria drafted new policies for data protection, established a tiered network to separate highly privileged users, instituted two-factor authentication and has added several other cybersecurity functions, protocols and best practices. The city also added a chief information security officer and drafted a multi-year strategic plan specifically for the ITS department, involving surveys, assessment of the department's primary functions and interviews with department stakeholders.

The City has been recognized by the Computer Technology Industry Association and Public Technology Institute with a 2020 Solutions Award for becoming the first in the United States to enable staff to provide 911 services from home. This allowed staff to maintain physical distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic and ensure continuity of critical public safety services to the community.

The City of Alexandria wins the Public Technology Institute's 2016 Award for New Real Estate Accounts Receivable System and also received "Significant Achievement" citations for High Availability Network Operations Center (NOC) Feasibility Study

The City of Alexandria wins the Public Technology Institute 2015 Technology Solutions Award in the IT & Telecommunications, and Cybersecurity and received "Significant Achievement" citations in the categories of Geospatial Information Systems, IT & Telecommunications,  Public Safety Technology and Project and Portfolio Management Implementation.  Alexandria was the only Virginia locality recognized in these categories, and one of only three recognized by this year's awards.

The City won the 2010 Governor's Technology Award for Cross‐Boundary Collaboration with the CAD2CAD Exchange Project, in an acknowledgement of regional interoperability.

Governor McDonnell recognized the most innovative government information technology projects in the Commonwealth during a ceremony at the Commonwealth of Virginia Innovative Technology Symposium (COVITS).

Entries were judged by an independent panel of Virginia government executives, including representatives of state executive branch and independent entities, localities, the legislature, judiciary and higher education. The awards program received a record number of entries this year, and judges' scores were very close, often within a fraction of a point, resulting in multiple winners named in several categories. Thirteen projects were named as winners and 17 more received honorable mentions.

COVITS (the Commonwealth of Virginia's Innovative Technology Symposium) promotes innovations and solutions to Virginias technology issues. COVITS accomplishes this by bringing together senior-level executives and technology decision makers from state and local government, business, and education to identify, discuss and propose solutions to Virginia's critical technology issues.
