AMP FAQs

What is the Alexandria Mentoring Partnership?

AMP is the collaboration of mentoring programs in the city of Alexandria, founded in 2006 and led by the Court Service Unit of the City of Alexandria.

What does AMP do?

AMP supports our mentoring programs by recruiting volunteers, providing trainings, forming community partnerships, promoting mentoring best practices, advertising mentoring, planning events, and more.

Can my program join AMP?

Alexandria mentoring programs or programs hoping to expand into mentoring are encouraged to get in touch with AMP (mentoring@alexandriava.gov).  All AMP programs follow The National Mentoring Partnership's best practices guide: Elements of Effective Practice.

How do I find a mentor for my child?

AMP does not connect children with mentoring programs.  If your child is looking for a mentoring program, you can get in touch with your child's school social worker or contact programs directly.

I wish to help AMP programs, but I'm not interested in mentoring. How else can I volunteer?

Some AMP programs have other, less intensive volunteer opportunities.  These volunteer positions can include working with children, working with the administration, fundraising, professional positions, and more. AMP also looks for volunteers for help with recruitment and celebration events. Contact the AMP coordinator or one of our program partners for more information.

Can I mentor if I have no-to-little experience with children?

All it takes to be a mentor is an open mind and the desire to work with children.  You do not need education or experience in working with children to mentor - each of our programs provide the training and support you will need.
