Budget Question #031: If approved in the adopted budget, how and when does the Police Department anticipate filling the 5 FTE proposed to comprise the Weapons Violation Taskforce? Will the staffing of these positions have a negative impact of patrol staffing? (Mayor Wilson)

Response:  The five proposed positions include current, seasoned officers who have exhibited an interest and aptitude for a taskforce of this magnitude. A Weapons Violation Taskforce is needed to combat the increase in weapon-related crimes in the City. While these officers can be used for the task force immediately, there will be a temporary impact on overall department staffing.  Efforts to minimize any impact on services include transferring officers from multiple units within the department so as not to place the burden entirely on Patrol officers. With continued recruitment efforts, the department will be able to hire five new officers to fill the positions left vacant by the new task force personnel assignments.
