Eco-City Academy

The Alexandria Eco-City Academy provides an opportunity for Alexandrians to learn about the City’s climate goals, services, and programs, and empower them to help others take advantage of programs and take individual actions. This includes learning about the City’s Environmental Action Plan (EAP), the steps City programs are taking to achieve these goals, and the resources available to individual residents to do their part to achieve the goals of the EAP.

Sessions are a combination of lectures and interactive activities. Class topics will include Climate Change and Introduction to Eco-City; Government Energy and Residential Energy; Transportation and Environmental Services; Green Buildings, Land Use, and Open Space; Solid Waste and Water Resources; and Environmental Health and Air Quality.

WHEN: Classes begin on Thursday, January 9, 2025. Sessions are on Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and will end on Thursday, February 13, 2025.

WHERE: Alexandria City Hall at 301 King Street, in the 1900 Conference Room.

WHAT: The curriculum covers the core elements that are essential for participants to gain a greater understanding of the steps City programs are taking to achieve the goals of the City’s Environmental Action Plan.

OVERVIEW: The Eco-City Academy engages Alexandrians with City employees to collaboratively address environmental challenges. The training equips participants with foundational knowledge of the City’s sustainable practices, based on the Environmental Action Plan.

Additionally, throughout this training, participants will gain an understanding of how to work together effectively to search for resources; and prevent, mitigate, and respond to environmental impacts--ensuring resilience and an assertive response to ecological and climate change incidents.

ELIGIBILITY: Participants must be at least 17 years of age and live in the City of Alexandria.

The application will be open from Monday, September 30 to Friday, November 8, 2024.

The program is offered FREE of charge. For more information, email Yulia Fernandez Marcos at Eco-CityAlexandria@alexandriava.gov.
