A Paid Opportunity with Purpose 

As summer approaches, so is an exciting opportunity for young residents eager to gain work experience, career paths and develop essential skills for their futures. The Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) is back for 2025, running from Monday, June 30 through Friday, August 8. This six-week program is designed specifically for eligible youth aged 14 to 21, offering a unique blend of professional development and personal growth. 

One of the standout features of SYEP is that it is not just a summer job; it is a paid opportunity that allows participants to earn while they learn. By working 20 to 30 hours per week, they can gain valuable insights into the workforce, enhance their resumes and build a strong foundation for future employment.  

SYEP is designed to be used as a platform for exploration. Participants will have the chance to engage in various roles, allowing them to discover their interests and talents. This exposure can help the youth to identify potential career paths and equip them with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions about their futures.  

In addition to hands-on work experience, SYEP emphasizes the importance of building skills that extend beyond the workplace. Participants will have the opportunity to focus on building essential life skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and time management. These skills are not only crucial for professional development but also for personal development, ensuring that youth are well-rounded individuals prepared for the challenges of adulthood.

Networking is a key component of professional growth, and SYEP recognizes this by providing participants with opportunities to connect with industry professionals and peers. Through this summer program, youth can form lasting relationships that may open doors to future internships, job opportunities or guidance in their career journeys. These connections can be instrumental in helping young people navigate their paths and achieve their goals.  

Call for Employer Participation 

Marsha, an Alexandria native, credits her early participation in the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) as a pivotal moment in her life. Growing up she took advantage of the opportunities provided by SYEP, which sparked her passion for personal growth and community engagement. After a successful career as an engineer, Marsha opened her own yoga studio, creating a space for wellness and mindfulness in the community. Last year she had the opportunity to host several youths at her studio, sharing her journey and inspiring the next generation. She believes that her SYEP experience not only helped shape her career but also deepened her commitment to giving back.
