What’s the Difference Between Broadband and Cable?

Broadband is high-speed internet delivered via technologies such as fiber, DSL, or wireless.

Cable in this context, typically refers to cable television service, though it’s often bundled with internet.

Why Do Some Companies Offer Only One Service?

Broadband and cable TV are governed by different regulatory frameworks:

  • Broadband providers operate under a telecommunications franchise agreement, which permits them to provide internet services.
  • Cable TV providers, under federal law, must obtain a local cable franchise agreement to offer traditional cable television service.

As a result, some companies may offer both services nationally but only have authorization for one in Alexandria.

Cable and Broadband Competition in Alexandria

Alexandria is open to broadband and cable competition. However, due to a variety of factors, including high infrastructure and capital costs. New entrants into the market are relatively rare. The City cannot compel providers to enter the market if they choose not to do so.

Service to Renters

Why might service be available in my neighborhood, but not in my apartment or building?

Service availability often depends on agreements between the service provider and the property owner or management company. Even if infrastructure (such as fiber lines) exists nearby, the provider must get permission to install equipment in or on the building. Without that agreement, the provider may not be able to offer service to individual units.
