As the holidays approach, many families in Alexandria face difficult choices. They may have to choose between paying bills, keeping the heat on, or buying warm clothes for their children. ALX Closet helps bridge the gap, providing free clothing, diapers, and hygiene essentials to families in need.

What is ALX Closet?

ALX Closet is a Clothing & Resource Center operated by the Center for Alexandria’s Children in partnership with The Fund for Alexandria’s Child. Located in the Del Pepper Community Resource Center, it supports local families referred through Alexandria’s social service providers.

Its mission is simple: to ensure every child and family have access to clothing and basic necessities, especially during this time of crisis.

Why It’s Especially Important this Season

The holiday season can be especially hard for families facing financial strain or recovery from hardship. Cold weather, rising costs, and holiday expectations make support like ALX Closet even more vital. Providing warm coats, socks, and essentials isn’t just about the clothing but about restoring comfort, confidence and dignity.

In addition, the federal government shutdown has placed enormous pressure on low-income households. This means that during a time when grocery bills, heating costs, and holiday spending are all higher, some families could lose access to their food-assistance benefits just when they need them the most.

How to Give Back this Holiday Season

Donate:

Drop off new or like-new clothing, diapers, or hygiene products at 4850 Mark Center Drive, fifth floor, Suite 5020 (Monday-Friday 10 a.m.- 3 p.m.) and ring the green doorbell. Items most needed include:

  • Diapers (size 4 & 5)
  • Children’s underwear and socks (new)
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Clothing for babies, children, and teens

Give or Volunteer:

Monetary donations and store gift cards are always welcome. You can also volunteer to help sort or organize donations.

Spread the Word:

Share information about ALX Closet on social media or within your community. Awareness helps keep the closet stocked and accessible.

This holiday season, you can help ensure no child in Alexandria goes without the basics. A small act, pack of socks, a new jacket, or a few hours of your time can make a huge difference.
