For E.G., a 63-year-old Navy veteran and Alexandria resident, access to healthy food became a turning point in managing serious health conditions, including high blood pressure and Type II diabetes.

After serving 10 years on active duty, E.G.’s health began to decline, eventually leading to dangerously high blood sugar levels and vision loss. Earlier this year, following a change in household circumstances and while living on a limited retirement income, he faced difficult choices between paying rent and buying nutritious food. As a result, he relied on fast food and low-cost processed meals to feed himself and his three children.

His blood sugar levels rose to nearly 400 mg/dL, prompting his doctor to warn that immediate dietary changes were critical. A referral to a nutritionist led E.G. to apply for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

After being approved last summer, E.G. and his children were able to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, and other nutritious foods that supported healthier eating habits and better management of his chronic conditions.

“Having access to healthy food made all the difference,” he said. “It gave me the chance to take control of my health.”

Because of a disability, E.G. often relies on neighbors for help with meal preparation. During a recent visit to Alexandria’s Department of Community and Human Services, the Food Security Team connected him with additional supports, including enrollment in the Meals on Wheels program and referrals for Aging Services such as subsidized taxi program and home cleaning assistance.

He also received education on protecting his SNAP EBT card from fraud and card skimming, which has become more common since the holiday season.

E.G.’s story highlights the important role SNAP plays in improving food access, supporting health, and strengthening stability for Alexandria residents.
