Go Inside APD: Community Police Academy Now Accepting Applications
The Alexandria Police Department (APD) is now accepting applications for the Spring 2026 Community Police Academy, a free, nine-week program designed to give those who live and/or work in Alexandria a comprehensive look at how public safety services are delivered in the city.
The academy provides participants with direct access to APD leadership, officers, and professional staff through classroom instruction, discussion, and interactive learning. Designed to increase transparency, deepen understanding, and strengthen community relationships, the program offers an inside look at APD operations. Through a mix of engaging sessions and hands-on activities, participants will explore many aspects of modern policing—from patrol operations and crime prevention to criminal investigations and specialized services.
Here’s what one academy graduate said, “Completing the Alexandria Community Police Academy helped me understand modern policing and communicate better with the community and public safety professionals,” said Tai, an Alexandria Resident and Community Police Academy graduate. “The experience was very meaningful, and I am thankful to everyone for their support.”
Program Details
- When: Wednesdays, 6:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., from March 11 through April 29, 2026, with a short graduation ceremony on May 6, 2026
- Where: Police Department Headquarters, 3600 Wheeler Avenue, Alexandria, VA 22304

What You Will Learn
The academy begins with an introduction from the Chief of Police and an overview of how the department serves the community. Participants will learn how officers respond to real-world situations, including behavioral health calls through the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) and the Alexandria Co-Response Program (ACORP), how officers are trained, and how investigations are handled. The program also highlights accountability and transparency, specialized units such as K-9 and crime scene investigation, traffic safety and DUI enforcement, and the resources in place to support officer wellness and safe outcomes for the community.
Together, these sessions provide participants with a clear picture of how APD approaches public safety, accountability, training, and community partnership.

Applications are open to individuals 21 years of age or older who live or work in the City of Alexandria. Participants must complete an application and background check prior to acceptance.
