Temporary Trail Closure on the Mt Vernon Trail and Lane Closure on East Abingdon Drive Begins March 6
Temporary Trail Closure on the Mt Vernon Trail and Lane Closure on East Abingdon Drive Begins March 6
Beginning Friday, March 6, contractors for the National Park Service and the Federal Highway Administration will begin shoreline embankment repair work on the Mt. Vernon Trail just north of Old Town. As a result, this section of the trail (shown below) will be closed between north of East Abingdon Drive and 3rd Street for approximately 5-6 weeks. This work will ensure the safety, stability and longevity of the trail for all users.
During this time, trail users will be detoured to the “alternate” Mt. Vernon Trail along East Abingdon Drive. Because this will increase pedestrian and cyclist traffic along East Abingdon Drive, contractors will temporarily block the eastern-most lane for two-way cycle traffic between Slaters Lane and the railroad tracks. One northbound lane on East Abingdon Drive will remain open to motor vehicle traffic throughout the project.
