The City of Alexandria announces the release of the Alexandria Age-Friendly Plan for a Livable Community 2026–2029, now available at alexandriava.gov/Aging. The Alexandria City Council voted unanimously to accept the Commission on Aging’s (COA) plan, reaffirming the City’s commitment to improving the lives of older Alexandrians. 

The Plan builds on the strategic vision of the prior Age-Friendly plan, which led to the city being named the first Age-Friendly jurisdiction in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Plan focuses on six domains: Housing; Civic Engagement and Economic Security; Outreach; Communication and Collaboration; Transportation; and Health.

Developed under the leadership of COA co-chairs Michael Schuster and DT Oliver, the Plan reflects community input from surveys and listening sessions where residents identified priorities such as affordable housing, assisted living options, and healthy homes free of mold and pests. Stakeholders included older adult residents, caregivers, nonprofit partners, the Office of Housing, and the Alexandria Health Department. This approach helps ensure that the goals are grounded in the lived experiences of Alexandrians.

The Plan underscores this core principle: what benefits older adults benefits everyone. Safer streets, accessible housing, clear communication, and strong social supports improve quality of life across generations.
