ADVISORY: Road Closure Extension for VRE Station Improvements 

Residents and motorists should be advised that the current road closures associated with the Alexandria Station and Bridge Improvements Project have been extended. 

Due to an unforeseen construction schedule modification, the project contractor has notified the City that the intersections at King Street, Russell Road, and Commonwealth Avenue will now remain closed until early tomorrow afternoon, Tuesday, May 5. 

Updated Construction Schedule & Impact 

The Virginia Railway Express (VRE) is in the process of replacing bridge spans across King Street and Commonwealth Avenue. These upgrades are essential for safety, reduced maintenance, and improved service reliability. 

Current Extension (Weekend of May 1–4): 

  • Status: King, Russell, and Commonwealth intersections remain closed. 
  • Revised Reopening: Early afternoon, Tuesday, May 5. 

Upcoming Construction Weekends: 

  • May 15–18: Friday at 7 a.m. through Monday at 10 p.m. 
  • May 29–June 1: Friday at 7 a.m. through Monday at 10 p.m. 

Traffic & Pedestrian Detours 

  • King Street: Fully closed between Russell Road and Daingerfield Road. Traffic is being detoured to Duke Street. 
  • Commonwealth Avenue: Typically remains open with a single lane of alternating traffic (directed by flaggers); however, please note the current intersection closure at King/Russell/Commonwealth mentioned above. 
  • Sunset Drive: Open to local traffic only. 
  • Pedestrians: The sidewalk connecting King Street to the station tunnel is closed on both sides under the bridge. Please follow posted detour signage. 
  • East Platform: Stairs from the east platform to King Street will be closed starting May 15. 

Additional Information 

  • Transit: There is no impact to Metro service during these periods. 
  • Noise: Overnight noise is expected to be very limited.
