VRE Station Improvements PROJECT UPDATE – Next Closure Re-Scheduled for May 29-June 2
The Virginia Railway Express (VRE) has postponed the construction on two replacement bridge spans across King Street and Commonwealth Avenue to begin on Friday, May 29 at 7 p.m. This closure will finish by Tuesday, June 2 at 6:30 am.
King Street and Commonwealth Avenue will be fully open until Friday May 29. No closures are expected until 7 p.m. May 29.
From Friday, May 29 at 7 p.m. to Tuesday, June 2 at 6:30 a.m., King Street will be fully closed between Russell Road and Daingerfield Road . Traffic will be detoured to Duke Street. Commonwealth Avenue will remain open with a single travel lane alternating traffic directed by flaggers. Sunset Drive will remain completely open.
The sidewalk connecting King Street to the Alexandria Union Station tunnel will be closed on both sides under the bridge from Friday, May 29 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 2 at 6:30 a.m.. The sidewalk along Commonwealth Avenue will remain open. Detour signage will be posted to direct pedestrians. The stairs from the east platform of Alexandria Union Station to King Street will be closed until the end of all construction.
