The City of Alexandria wants to hear from you about your priorities for the upcoming Virginia General Assembly. Residents can take a short survey online about the priorities in the City's legislative package. The survey is open from August 7 through August 28. Your feedback will help us make sure the package reflects what matters most to our community in 2027.

Every year, the City of Alexandria creates a legislative package that lists the City’s policy goals and funding needs. The City shares these priorities with state lawmakers so local voices are heard.

What were the 2026 Legislative Priorities?

This year, the City included seven policy areas in its legislative package:

  • Address Impacts of Federal Workforce and Funding Reductions
  • Advance Housing Affordability and Economic Opportunity
  • Rebuild Critical School Infrastructure
  • Address Mental Health, Public Health and Safety, and Community Well-Being
  • Advance Opportunity for All Alexandrians
  • Strengthen Transit, Infrastructure, Resilience, and Clean Energy Transition
  • Promote Civic Engagement and Election Integrity

You can take our survey to tell us about how you would prioritize these areas in 2027.

Why Does the City Have a Legislative Package?

Virginia is a 'Dillon Rule' state. This means cities can only use powers that state lawmakers specifically give them, through state law or a city's charter. In Alexandria, we send requests to state lawmakers through our yearly legislative package. The items in the package usually come from City Council, City staff, and boards and commissions. The legislative package clearly shares the City's priorities with lawmakers, staff, advocates, and the public.
