Five Myths About Domestic Violence

October 29, 2026 — Domestic violence can happen anywhere, at any time, and to anyone. But it remains stigmatized and widely misunderstood.

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we’re tackling five common misconceptions about domestic violence to help dispel myths and empower everyday people to take action to prevent violence from occurring in their communities.

  1. Domestic violence is only physical.

Domestic violence is any pattern of coercive, controlling behavior used by one individual to control or exert power over another individual in an intimate or familial relationship. Domestic violence is not limited to physical acts of aggression. It can include emotional, psychological, financial, sexual or technological abuse, as well as threats that can make a person fear for their safety.

  1. Domestic violence is rare.

In Alexandria alone, thousands of people are survivors of domestic violence, and last year the Domestic Violence hotline received over 2000 calls from residents. Nationally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men have experienced domestic violence in their lifetimes. Domestic violence is common and occurs more often than we think.

  1. Domestic violence only affects certain types of people.

Domestic violence can happen to anyone, regardless of age, gender, income, disability, education, religion, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, race, or ethnicity. Likewise, anyone can be a perpetrator of violence.

  1. Domestic violence is a private matter that should only be addressed by the people involved.

The harm caused by domestic violence impacts us all. Building a culture of respect and nonviolence in our communities, families, and relationships can help prevent domestic violence from occurring. Together, we can ensure the safety and health of everyone in our community.

  1. Domestic violence hotlines are only for people directly experiencing domestic violence.

While the 24-hour confidential Domestic Violence hotline is always available to support survivors, people who are concerned about an individual in their life in an abusive relationship can also call the hotline (703.746.4911) to learn about what help is available and how to best support the people they care about.

We all deserve to be in loving, caring, and respectful relationships. Raising awareness about domestic violence and dispelling myths is the first step to preventing it. Learn more about the warning signs of domestic violence, get involved with local efforts to support survivors, or make a donation to support Alexandria families affected by domestic violence.

If you or a someone you care about is a survivor of domestic violence and looking for support, please contact the 24-hour confidential Domestic Violence hotline 703.746.4911 or visit Domestic Violence Program | City of Alexandria, VA.
