Winter Shelter Opens November 1
October 29, 2026 – For people experiencing homelessness, the colder weather brings a higher risk of hypothermia and frostbite – potentially life-threatening health conditions that are preventable.
To help keep unhoused Alexandrians healthy and safe, the City of Alexandria operates a winter shelter program in partnership with Carpenter’s Shelter.
The Winter Shelter is available nightly, regardless of the weather, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., beginning Sunday, November 1 through Thursday, April 15. It is located at 2355-B Mill Rd (left side of front entrance, next to the fence) and is open to both single adults and families.
In addition to the Winter Shelter, the City also offers warming centers at libraries and recreation centers across the city to provide relief from the cold for community members who may not have access to a warm shelter during the day. For a full list of warming centers and their operating hours, please visit alexandriava.gov/122602.
Homelessness can affect people from all backgrounds. If you or a neighbor are experiencing a housing crisis, call 703.746.5700 or walk in to meet with a member of the Homeless Services Assessment Center, located on the fifth floor of the Del Pepper Community Resource Center, 4850 Mark Center Drive. Center staff can offer referrals to support services and provide targeted assistance. Walk-in services are available Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., except holidays.
