Personal Delivery Devices
Personal Delivery Devices in Alexandria
Personal Delivery Devices (PDDs) are small, autonomous sidewalk robots designed to transport goods directly to customers. As this technology becomes more common across the country, the City is committed to keeping residents informed and ensuring these devices operate safely within our community.
For restaurants that choose to use these devices, they may serve as an alternative to larger delivery vehicles for short-distance food deliveries.
Why Are PDDs Operating Here?
Personal Delivery Devices are largely regulated by Virginia code 46.2-904 and 46.2-908.1:1, which authorizes companies to deploy them here. The City will work with the operators to ensure they are operating safely.
What Residents Can Expect
As PDDs appear in more neighborhoods, you may notice small robots traveling along sidewalks or stopping briefly for deliveries. They are designed to operate predictably, navigate around people, and pause when necessary to avoid conflicts.
If you encounter a PDD:
- Feel free to simply walk around it
- Do not attempt to push, block, or tamper with the device
- Report any malfunctioning or obstructive PDDs via Alex311 (keyword: personal delivery device)
PDDs will not operate on King Street or in certain areas of Old Town.
