The Alexandria Police Department has completed its investigation regarding the matter about inappropriate items found inside an Alexandria Police cruiser on October 18, 2023. To ensure that citizens can redress grievances, APD uses rigorous internal processes to ensure greater accountability of and public trust in APD.

Because there was no criminal act committed, the matter was handled administratively and thoroughly investigated by APD’s Office of Professional Responsibility. An administrative investigation is a personnel matter that typically considers standards of professional conduct and integrity. The investigation did find violations of APD directives and City policies.

This case is now proceeding through City personnel processes and APD cannot comment on the case findings. However, the Alexandria Police Department does not condone, nor tolerate, any behavior contrary to its policies and procedures. While the Department will continue to invest in effective law enforcement training programs that advance effective, accountable policing to enhance public trust and public safety, this incident emphasizes the need to recommit to the important training of our officers.

The City welcomes any concerns residents may have regarding APD personnel, including anonymous information. Residents may submit complaints, commendations, or comments to policeoversight@alexandriava.gov. We appreciate and value our resident’s input on the service provided by APD.
