Alexandria Police Department Opens Registration for Fall Community Police Academy

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 2, 2025

Alexandria, VA – The Alexandria Police Department is now accepting applications for its 2025 Community Police Academy, a free, nine-week program designed to give residents and those who work in the city a firsthand look at how their police department operates—and how they can play a role in building a safer, more informed community.

Beginning Wednesday, September 17, the academy will meet weekly from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. at Police Headquarters (3600 Wheeler Avenue). Sessions run through November 12, with a formal graduation ceremony on November 19.

Participants will explore a wide range of topics through both classroom presentations and hands-on activities, including:

  • Criminal investigations and crime scene processing

  • Traffic safety and speed enforcement using LIDAR

  • Hostage negotiations and the Special Operations Team

  • Firearms range and K9 unit demonstrations

  • An overview of how officers and mental health professionals partner through the Co-Response Program

  • Optional patrol ride-alongs

The academy is not designed for those seeking a career in law enforcement, but for individuals interested in learning more about police operations, transparency, and the shared responsibility of public safety. Participants must be 21 years of age or older and live or work in the City of Alexandria. Class size is limited to 25 participants, and a background check is required. Attendance at all sessions is strongly encouraged.

Why Participate?

When residents are informed, they can become stronger voices in their neighborhoods and more effective partners in public safety. Through programs like this, community members help identify challenges, support transparency, and shape local solutions. When residents and police work together, everyone benefits.

How to Apply

Applications are open now, at alexandriava.gov/police. The deadline to apply is Monday, August 11, 2025.

For more information on the Community Police Academy, visit the website or contact mary.bruno@alexandriava.gov.
