Alexandria Police In-Custody Death Investigation
Alexandria Police In-Custody Death Investigation
ALEXANDRIA, VA – Yesterday at approximately 5:07 PM, Alexandria Police Officers responded to a call for unknown trouble in the 2800 block of N. Beauregard Street. Multiple callers to 911 reported a man running up and down the apartment hallways, yelling and knocking on doors. Officers arrived and located an adult man in the hallway, causing a disturbance to the surrounding neighbors. Officers worked to de-escalate the situation with the man prior to arresting him for public intoxication. He was transported to the Alexandria Adult Detention Center, where he later needed medical assistance. Despite life-saving measures by APD officers and medical personnel, the man died at the scene.
The Office of the Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.
As is protocol in an officer-involved critical incident involving the death of a suspect, the investigation is being conducted by the regional Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) comprised of investigators from other regional law enforcement agencies, independent of APD. Subsequent to that investigation, there will be an administrative investigation conducted by the APD Office of Professional Responsibility.
