January Observances Highlight Community Safety, Awareness, and Service

January is a month of reflection, recognition, and action, marked by several national observances that highlight public safety, victim advocacy, prevention, and service to others. Together, these observances offer opportunities for the Alexandria community to show support, raise awareness, and strengthen partnerships that help keep our city safe.

National Stalking Awareness Month, observed throughout January, focuses on education, prevention, and victim support. Stalking often involves repeated, unwanted behaviors that cause fear or emotional distress, and awareness can help prevent escalation and connect victims to resources.

Common warning signs may include individuals who appear controlled by another person, are unable to speak freely, or do not have access to their own identification, money, or personal documents. Other indicators can include signs of fear, anxiety, or physical abuse; working long hours for little or no pay; living at their place of employment; or providing scripted or inconsistent information about their situation. For minors, unexplained expensive items, frequent absences from school, or references to a controlling older individual can be especially concerning.
  • Share educational resources and awareness messages
  • Support organizations that provide services to survivors
  • Report suspected trafficking activity through appropriate channels

If you suspect someone may be experiencing human trafficking, do not intervene directly. Trust your instincts and report concerns to local law enforcement or the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888, or by texting 233733 (BEFREE). Awareness and timely reporting can help connect victims with support services and prevent further exploitation.
