ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The City of Alexandria invites residents to take part in National Night Out 2026, a nationwide event that promotes neighborhood connections, community partnerships, and public safety through resident engagement.

On Tuesday, August 4, communities across Alexandria will host local gatherings ranging from outdoor block parties and cookouts to apartment lobby meetups and ice cream socials. These events provide an opportunity for neighbors to connect, strengthen community relationships, and support a safer Alexandria.

Last year, the City of Alexandria was recognized as one of the Top 15 National Night Out communities in the United States within its population category. Selected from more than 400 similarly sized communities, Alexandria earned this distinction through the strong participation of residents, civic associations, apartment communities, businesses, and public safety partners working together to build safer, more connected neighborhoods.

That partnership continues to make a meaningful difference. In 2025, Alexandria experienced a double-digit reduction in crime, reflecting the collective efforts of residents, community organizations, City agencies, and public safety personnel.

As National Night Out continues to grow across Alexandria each year, residents are encouraged to help expand participation by inviting neighbors, community groups, apartment communities, and local organizations to get involved and host events of their own.

The Alexandria Police Department, along with public safety partners and City leadership, will visit registered events throughout the evening as schedules allow.

Residents throughout Alexandria are encouraged to participate, including those in single-family homes, apartment communities, townhomes, civic associations, homeowners associations, and faith-based organizations.

By hosting or joining an event, residents help:

  • Build stronger neighborhood relationships
  • Promote shared responsibility for public safety
  • Foster community awareness and engagement
  • Build positive connections with first responders and City staff

Interested in Hosting an Event?
Residents and community groups are encouraged to register their gatherings with the Alexandria Police Department to be included on the official National Night Out event list and to help coordinate visits from public safety personnel.

This August, join your neighbors and help demonstrate that strong communities and strong relationships help build a safer Alexandria.
