City of Alexandria Offers Free Tax Preparation to Qualifying Residents at New DCHS Location

For Immediate Release: February 7, 2023

The City of Alexandria is offering free tax preparation services to qualifying residents. Taxpayers are eligible if their income is below $59,000 for individuals and families. Expert volunteers from Community Tax Aid, Inc. will ensure that taxpayers apply for all applicable credits and deductions, especially the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit, which people may not realize they are eligible to receive. Electronic filing is provided.

Services will be offered Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon, and Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., February 18 through April 19, at the Department of Community and Human Services, now located at 4850 Mark Center Drive. (Please note this new address.)

The following documentation is required: a social security or taxpayer ID card for each family member; a photo ID for the taxpayer (and spouse, if filing jointly); W-2 forms and other income records, receipts or records for expenses such as childcare and education; if possible, a copy of last year’s tax return; and as applicable:

    • Form 1095-A if you had health insurance through the Marketplace
    • IP PIN letter if the IRS issues you an Identity Protection PIN
    • Any other letters from the IRS or state/Washington DC tax agency

The location is a five-minute walk from the Mark Center Transit Station and is served by DASH transit, where all rides are free. For DASH schedule information, call 703.370.DASH (3274) or visit dashbus.com. For Metrobus schedule information, call 202.637.7000 or visit wmata.com.

In the event of inclement weather, visit alexandriava.gov/Calendar/ to see if appointments are canceled. If Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) close or if school activities are cancelled, as reported on the ACPS Hotline (703.866.5300), tax appointments will also be cancelled.

For more information about the free tax preparation service, call 202.830.1480 (English) or 202.869.2999 (Spanish). See the Free Income Tax Preparation Program schedule and view flyer the additional details.
