The City of Alexandria is proud to announce its recognition as a 2025 Better Practice Award winner from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Better Buildings Initiative. This acknowledgement highlights accomplishments in implementing and promoting practices, principles, and procedures of energy management. The City is being recognized for instituting its new Building Performance Program for City Facilities.

This effort, a collaboration between Alexandria’s Office of Climate Action and Department of General Services, focuses on achieving deep energy efficiency improvements in City facilities.

“Energy performance has always been a priority for City facilities, we’ve reduced energy use by about 16% over the last five years” said Jeremy McPike, Director of the Department of General Services. “This effort builds on that success and positions the City to continue to be a leader in sustainability.”

A key to the strategy is approaching building investments holistically, allowing building managers to develop high-impact energy efficiency improvements for each building, setting them on a trajectory to meet ambitious energy reduction goals.

“Building managers, public and private, face the challenge of maintaining occupant comfort and health with aging infrastructure and increasing utility costs” said Ryan Freed, Climate Action Officer. “This program provides the City with tools to make long-term investments that improve quality of life for building occupants while reducing the overall energy use and costs for the City.”

The 2025 Better Practice Award was given to the City at an event in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, May 1st. Receiving the award on behalf of the City were representatives from the Office of Climate Action and Department of General Services that led the effort: Energy Manager, Valerie Amor, Green Building Manager, David Kaiser, and Energy Project Specialist, Charles Jackson.
