Join the Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities (RPCA) at the Eugene Simpson Stadium Park Groundbreaking this Saturday, June 21!

The Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities (RPCA) is thrilled to invite the Alexandria community to celebrate a major milestone at one of our City’s most treasured park spaces—Eugene Simpson Stadium Park located at 426 E. Monroe Ave.

Join us on Saturday, June 21 at 10 a.m. for a special groundbreaking ceremony celebrating the rich legacy of Eugene Simpson Stadium Park and marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter.

As a token of appreciation, the first 120 community members in attendance will receive a small jar of “Simpson”—a keepsake to honor the memories and moments made at this beloved park.

This commemorative event will reflect on decades of memories at “Big Simpson” and “Little Simpson,” the two beloved ballfields built in 1953 through a generous contribution from Eugene Simpson. His vision created a central gathering space for Alexandria’s sports teams, and over time, RPCA has expanded the site with additional programs and amenities.

“As we reminisce on the past and look to the future, I am excited for all the great enhancements to come in 2026,” said Hashim T. Taylor, Director of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities. “We look forward to marking this moment with the community that has helped shape and support this park over the years.”

Don’t miss this opportunity to celebrate the past, present, and future of Eugene Simpson Stadium Park—together.

New renovations to come in 2026:

  • Planting a native tree buffer along the E. Duncan Alleyway

  • Extending hardscape trails to the park’s northeast section

  • Adding ADA-compliant access from E. Monroe to the dog park and rectangular fields

  • Installing new bleachers at Big and Little Simpson

  • Upgrading dugouts at both fields

  • Adding new storage space at Big Simpson

  • Building a dedicated concession stand at Big Simpson

  • Creating a passive use and picnic area next to the concession stand

  • Enhancing traffic flow and expanding the parking lot

  • Installing synthetic turf at Big Simpson to improve drainage and playability

  • Re-grading the natural turf field at Little Simpson to resolve drainage issues
